For those of you who read my post the other day on "I'm Miffed at General Motors", there's a new Business Week article that sheds some more light on the issue. "GM: Flirting with the Nuclear Option" details the current situation, but what I found more interesting were the comments (at the bottom in the comments section) such as this one from an employee:
"I'm a GM retiree (11/1/03) and watch what's going on closely. GM's problems stem from 2 things: 1) poor products/product planning you can blame mainly on Bob Lutz, I can list 10 off the top of my head. And 2) ridiculously high increases in health care costs, which is now a NATIONAL crisis! I'm willing to help GM by paying something towards my health care, BUT!, GM has to put product planners in place who design cars and trucks the American buyer wants. The UAW didn't cause this problem, GM management did."
Good point. This person agrees:
"If GM made good cars they would not have this problem at all. Their cars are poor and people have stopped buying them automatically."
That's my situation. I won't buy a car that doesn't rate highly in quality -- something GM's cars rarely do.
From a different viewpoint:
"Probably everyone in this nation both working & retirees pay a premium for their health insurance (if they have any), so I don't feel sorry for the poor UAW employee and retirees."
What do you think?
Update: I'm linking this to the Beltway Traffic Jam.
