On Tuesday, I posted on how some people can Make a Fortune by Finding Lost Money.
The key points of the post were:
- It's likely that there's some money, property, etc. owed to you or someone you know out there.
- There are a lot of questionable companies that want to "help" you find it -- for a fee of course.
- You should research the process for finding such funds and then proceed carefully. You may hit the jackpot -- just be careful as you try.
So I had to comment when I ran into a story today titled State Governments Reap Growing Caches of Unclaimed Cash. The following sections of the piece were especially interesting:
- States collected $22.8 billion in 2003 in money belonging to people who didn't come forward to claim it – a 44 percent increase over the $15.8 billion they collected in 2000, according to surveys by the Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
- "When somebody shows up, you give them their money," said John Kennedy, Louisiana's treasurer. "But most people don't know it's there."
My advice is to do a bit of investigation for and on yourself (and what's owed to you). Don't let one of the states grab something that is rightfully yours.
