As you can imagine, I get a lot of comment and trackback spam here at Free Money Finance. I've been fighting it for a long time, manually deleting spam after it happens, in order to allow readers the opportunity to post comments and see them come up automatically. Well, after an hour of deleting spam this morning, I'm moving to moderated comments. You'll now submit a comment, it will come to me for approval, and I'll have to give the "ok" before it gets posted. Sorry to have to do this, but I can't waste an hour every day because of spam. It's just too much.

Testing the system myself to see if it works. ;-)

I don't know about Typepad, but WordPress has plugins which work great for stopping comment spam, such as WP-Hashcash, which works by using a bit of JavaScript before you can post. Since spambots don't generally have JavaScript interpreters built in, this stops them cold, without inconveniencing either you or your readers.

Another option is to make it so that you only have to approve one comment from the person before the rest of their comments will go through automatically.
