Here's a slideshow from Forbes that lists the highest paying jobs. Their top 10 (with average annual salaries) includes:
- Surgeons: $181,850
- Anesthesiologists: $174,610
- Obstetricians and Gynecologists: $174,490
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons: $169,600
- Internists, General: $156,790
- Prosthodontists: $156,710
- Orthodontists: $153,240
- Psychiatrists: $151,380
- Chief Executives: $140,880
- Pediatricians, General: $140,000
In other words, go into the medical profession if you want to maximize your salary. However, if you want to maximize your lifetime net earnings, you may want to go another route. For instance, chief executives may net more after surgeons have to pay for malpractice insurance. In addition, surgeons have 3-5 years less to earn an income (longer times spent in school) and MUCH higher post graduate college costs.
A few others on the list of interest to me:
- Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers: $134,090
- Lawyers: $110,590
- Marketing Managers: $100,020
I have some thoughts on how to prepare for the highest-paying careers. But no matter what career you choose, the key is to make the most of it by getting a college degree and managing your career to its full potential. Doing this well can earn you millions of dollars in extra income throughout your lifetime.
Remember: your career is your most valuable financial asset, offering you many financial benefits. Develop it and it will be kind to your net worth. ;-)
