Here's a piece I recently found that compares and contrasts materialism to wealth. Their key thoughts:
Materialism and wealth are not the same. Abraham, Solomon and Job all possessed great wealth. Materialism represents an attitude toward things.
Has the “lure” of things blurred the sharp outlines of God’s kingdom? You may have succumbed to the virus of materialism.
It is an eagerness to “have and to hold” possessions, a preoccupation with money for self-advantage, and a zeal to pursue the “good life” without regard for much else. To themselves, materialists whisper, “If only I had a little more.” Materialism widely afflicts baby boomers, retirees, as well as those between these groups.
The article discusses the lure of materialism and how to prevent it. Their suggestions:
- Listen to the Word
- Do an audit
- Where is your treasure?
- Think ahead
- Be positive
The following scriptures highlight the foolishness of materialism and a preoccupation with gaining (more) wealth to me:
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Mark 8:36
Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. Proverbs 11:4
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17

I found your site a few weeks ago and have since passed the link along to several friends. I so appreciate your take on money matters and I especially appreciate the biblical insights as well - it helps to keep my mind and spirit focused on what matters.
Thanks again
