I often offer suggestions on how to make more money, so when I got the book Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash I was excited to see what it had to offer (hopefully a lot of great ways to make some extra cash).
Book Summary
There are three major parts of Weekend Entrepreneur:
- Part 1: Getting Started (And Why You Should) -- Gives the "whys" and "hows" of being a weekend entrepreneur.
- Part 2: Great Ideas for Weekend Entrepreneurs -- 101 business ideas to help you make extra money.
- Part 3: Success Strategies -- General tips (including marketing ideas) for weekend entrepreneurs.
My Thoughts and Rating
As noted above, the book has three parts -- and they really are distinct -- like three books in one. Here's what I thought about each of them:
- Part 1: Getting Started (And Why You Should) -- Pretty weak section on why you should be a weekend entrepreneur and how to go about it -- weak, that is, compared to other books you could find on these topics (or free stuff you could find on the web).
- Part 2: Great Ideas for Weekend Entrepreneurs -- This was the section I was most excited about -- some real ideas to make extra money. In general, I would say that the ideas are "fair" (not good and not bad). There's something here for everyone (some examples: rain gutter cleaning; dog doo removal; online piano lessons; creating memory boxes), though I think many of the ideas require much more than a weekend commitment to get off the ground and become successful.
- Part 3: Success Strategies -- Probably the best part of the book -- especially the marketing tips. While you could get more meat from other books, there are some great tips in here for marketing a small business in a small amount of space (10 pages or so). They're useful no matter what business you pursue.
But generally, the book was a disappointment from what I expected and probably not worth buying for most of the people reading this review. There's just not that much value there. I'd suggest that if you're interested, you either check it out from the library or go to your bookstore, glance through part 2 to see if there's anything of interest to you, and then decide whether to buy it or not.
The Free Money Finance rating for Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash (based on my 0 thru 10 rating system) is: 5 Stars.

I was excited when first seeing this book on Amazon but took it to the Borders Cafe section to flip thru it and I had gleaned all useful info in 5 minutes tops. Much of the info was very basic stuff, available all over on pfblogs.org-type places and could have been compressed to a pamphlet.

Peter Drucker once said that "Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship... the act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth." Whatever political and tax changes come in the future the country must continue to how long-standing economic success is truly achieved.
