If you've been reading my The Bible and Money category posts for any amount of time, you know how many Bible verses there are that deal with money and finances (and I've only used a fraction of them!) But I got to thinking the other day about which one would be my favorite. It didn't take me long to come to choose a "winner". My favorite money-related Bible verse is as follows:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Matthew 6:19-20
For me, this is the foundational verse that guides how I handle, spend, and manage the finances that come into my life. My purpose is to take the earthly, financial resources God gives me and manage them in such a way as to transfer them into treasures in heaven. How can this be done? By managing money according to the principles listed in the Bible.
Now it's your turn. What's your favorite financial verse in the Bible?

The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.
Proverbs 21:20 New Living Translation
Precious treasure remains in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.
Revised Standard Version
There is desirable treasure, And oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man squanders it.
The New King James Version
Be sensible and store up precious treasures-- don't waste them like a fool.
Contemporary English Version
There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise, But a foolish man swallows it up.
New American Standard Version
There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; But a foolish man swalloweth it up.
King James

I don't have a favorite off hand, but I think it would surprise many people to know how much the Bible speaks to matters on finance. A quick keyword search on terms like "money", "wealth" and "riches" yields hundreds of scripture references. This underscores my belief that good stewardship of money is a faithful act.

Hm.. my hyperlink for keyword search on the previous message was "eaten" by the comment filter, but interested persons may wish to try it out:

I think my favourite and the most controversial part of the gospel was when Judas received 30 silver coins for the head of Jesus. Because of this, we led Jesus to suffer and die on the cross. It still talks about money.

James 5:4 is one stark reminder and is sort of related to the passage in Matthew that you quoted. I wish more CEOs would read this passage, especially the ones that profess a deep faith while taking all they can from the company.
1Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.

I remember reading sometime last year a bible verse that pretty much said "don't do business with an unbeliever" and I can't seem to find it now. Can anyone help?

Katrina --
I'm familiar with the verse, but can't locate it either. If you find a copy of "Business by the Book" by Larry Burkett, I'm sure it will be in there. Or you can contact Crown Ministries and ask them.

Malachi 2:10 Bring all tithes into the storehouse, that there my be food in my house. And test me in this.
"If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing. That there will be no room enough to receive it."
This is the only place in the bible where GOD asks us to test him. This is my favorite financial verse. God is tesing you with what you have now. Then he will pour out his blessing for you.
Also look at Luke 21:1-4. The woman gave two copper coins-what amounted to a fraction of a penny. This seems a trivial amount. However, God viewed her trivial amount with more regard than the large offerings of the rich. Why? By giving all she had, the woman showed utter devotion to God. She was willing to offer everything she possessed to show love to God.

Do not wear yourself to get rich, have the wisdom to show restraint. - Proverbs 23:4
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. - Proverbs 27:1

You beat me to it! This is the verse on the homepage of my blog this week.
"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle." Proverbs 23:4-5

My mother was one of the most Bible believing and righteous people I have ever encountered and at the end of her life she didnt have the money to fix up her home so I am left wondering about this and God. I then witnessed how the children fight over money after the death of a parent. I then witnessed how having money is a good thing especially if you have never had it, even if it is just a small amount, but when you spend it, which after all has to be the purpose of it (not to just sit and watch it!) it is gone and doesnt get replenished. I gave to those less fortunate than me and I was pretty close to the bottom of the barrel. I witnessed my car get wrecked and the policeman told be I was SOL with no insurance. I am still processing these events and you probably wont think they mean much as I am not usually on same page as rich "Christians" who seem to hoard and think God especially loves them.

2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
I think this is the verse some of you were looking for...

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
People should remember that money is not the root of evil (this is miss quoted all the time by people saying that money is the root of all evil)but the love of money is. Remember that where your focus should be (GOD) and he will work all other things out for you.
Money should and can be used appropriatley to better your life and others when you follow GOD'S word and are wise with the blessings that you recieve.
