Here are some thoughts from the book The Net Worth Workout: A Powerful Program for a Lifetime of Financial Fitness (see my rating for details) on the two major problems people face when they consider financial planning:
Most people didn't know where they were trying to go financially, so naturally, they didn't know for certain how to get there.
These are two issues I'm trying to address here at Free Money Finance -- helping people set financial goals and providing simple, practical ways to get there.
I've read several blogs lately where people have lamented not knowing how to handle their finances. In the end, managing your money is not that hard (that's why I can write about it!) and the application of a few, basic principles can make all the difference in the world. For example:

I've heard it said, and have used this line myself, that "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there."
Having a clear vision of where you want to go and what you want to accomplish is often the toughest part and biggest hurdle to get people going on their financial path.
Great post.
