Here's an interesting piece from Money magazine. It offers easy ways to save $400,000 throughout your lifetime. Their list includes:
- Drive less expensive cars during your lifetime: $180,000
- Send your child to a public (not private) university: $164,000
- Cut vacation spending by $1,000 a year: $122,000
My thoughts on these:
1. Yep. I do this. We usually buy new cars and drive them till they are dead. And while they aren't bottom-of-the-barrel cars, we're not driving BMW's either.
2. Good tip. I'm not sure where our kids will go (much of it is up to them), but we'll certainly do all we can to see they get a good education at the best price possible. If you want some more thoughts on saving on and for college, see Best of Free Money Finance: College and Education Posts.
3. Ha! I only spend $1,000 (on average) on vacations as it is. We usually spend $500 per year or so, then every five years take a bigger, more expensive trip. No savings in this tip for me -- unless I want to take no vacation at all!!!

Enjoyed the info on you and your blog in the local press. Almost as much as I enjoy Denali Ice Cream. How do you control quality when it is sold under, say, Walgreens and Safeway labels?

It's made to strict specifications and we have a team that picks up products and tests them for quality to make sure these instructions are followed.
