Other than having disability ins., some emergency savings, and not living at full capacity (so you have room to cut back if you have to), there isn't a whole lot to do to prepare. Medical and health insurance costs are high and dis. benefits are rarely enough to cover it all with a serious or lifelong illness. If you wanted to prepare or save enough, you'd have to pretty much put everything you had into a fund for potential medical bills, because you can quickly spend all you have and more once your become disabled. I suggest working toward changing our healthcare system and dis. insurance, as well as getting disability insurance. And also realizing that even with disability benefits, you will likely be seriously struggling. Half of all bankruptcies are due to medical bills, and not always because they individuals affected did not do enough to prepare, but because the financial effects of dis. in this country can be so devastating that often no amount of preparation is enough.
