Update: This giveaway is now over. See my comment in the comments section below for the winner.
For those of you who don't know, I've used Quicken for a long, long time now (over 10 years for sure) and don't know what I'd do without it. In particular, I primarily use the following features:
- Tracking of spending -- I load in every transaction (cash, check, or credit card) and regularly review what I'm spending and where I'm spending it
- Tracking of investments -- Quicken makes it easy to download prices of investments to help me see my portfolio's performance
- Net worth -- The most useful feature to me -- I follow it religiously (I record the results once a month and then blog about them here)
I'll be detailing some other thoughts on Quicken in the next few weeks, but for now I wanted to tell you two things:
1. Quicken Premier 2008 is now out. If you want to see what it has to offer, check out this page.
2. I have five copies of Quicken Premier 2008 that I'll be giving away over the next five weeks.
Here's how you can have a chance to win the giveaway this week:
1. Leave a comment below -- any comment.
2. Sometime in the next week, I'll stop by the post, stop the submissions, and name the winner.
3. It will be that person's responsibility to check back to see if they are a winner and then email me their contact information.
4. I'll send the winner a link to download a free copy of Quicken Premier 2008.
A few rules for these giveaways:
1. You can not win more than one prize.
2. I will be the complete and final judge.
3. Legal disclaimer: I can not guarantee safe delivery of the items. I'll send the prizes via email and since they come from Quicken, they should be fine, but since I can't control the links I won't be held accountable if there's a mess up.
4. If you win something and do not contact me within a week of winning, I reserve the right to give your prize away to another winner. Note again: I won't track down the winners -- it's your responsibility to come back and see if you won.
5. Local laws, rules, and regulations apply.
Good luck! Post a comment below for your chance to win!

Oooh, new Quicken! My Quicken is so old I had to disable all its fancy stuff and they sent me stern e-mails warning me I was violating human nature by keeping such old software. I'd love a new one! Thanks for the contest.

Have been using Quicken for Mac, but heard it's a lot better for PC. So I purchased a used PC just for handling my finances. A free copy of Quicken 08 would come in handy, especially after the $150 I spent on the used computer. :)

I've also been using Quicken for a long time. I used to use Moneycounts until they were bought out by Intuit and was forced to switch to Quicken. It's a wonderful product and I would love the latest version!

I'm using Microsoft Money and don't really like it, but I also can't justify spending the $70 to buy Quicken to do essentially the same thing.

Quick - I need quicken. My old verssion does not handle my situation well. Also, I would like to give my old version to my daughter who graduates from college in December and hopefully will be fully employed in 08.
Posted by: GLM | October 02, 2007 at 04:21 PM
I also have been using MS Money (2006 version now). I would like to get off the MS train, but keeping track of my finances in a clean format has kept me using Money. Maybe Quicken is the answer?

from all the customer reviews i have read about quicken during the last few years, it seems like this quicken might be worth what the winner pays for it. but what the hey! i'm in.
Posted by: bettis | October 02, 2007 at 04:29 PM
I've always wanted to track my finances in something like Quicken or Money, but was discouraged by the seeming complexity of it. The last time I looked at it was over 7 years ago. I expect its much easier to use now. Well, if I win a copy, I suppose I'll find out!
Posted by: Alan | October 02, 2007 at 04:30 PM
I actually have a real question, believe it or not. Do you have a threshold for cash transactions? I used to even track $1.50 soda or coffee purchases in my cash account, but I found it tedious and it didn't really yield much usable data. Do you find that tracking <$5.00 transactions produces usable data?
And is 2008 really an improvement on 2007? Most reviews seem underwhelmed enough to not recommend 2007 owners upgrade. But I'm trying to get my girlfriend to use Quicken, so it's not like I wouldn't accept the free copy.

I used Peachtree Accounting for a while, due to a promotion at Staples (free after rebate). The UI was always hard to deal with, and I eventually gave up on it for GnuCash, a free, open source alternative.
I've been quite happy with it, in terms of ease of use and how quickly it enables me to manage my finances. Probably my biggest complaint with the software is that for many banks, the online banking that they enable with Quicken is through hidden or poorly documented web services that only Quicken knows how to work with. I've managed to enable it for a few of my banks and credit cards, but not all of them work yet.
I haven't had an opportunity to try Quicken, so I'm not sure how GnuCash or Peachtree compare to it. Certainly anything has to be better than Peachtree for personal finances.

Daniel,
To me, it's worthwhile to track everything. So many of my purchase are just a few dollars that I could easily lose track of hundreds of dollars very quickly. I do buy _everything_ with a credit card, so that makes the job a little easier: just import the OFX file from your bank/credit card into your finance software.

I have been using quicken for 7 years now. I love it. It give me a clear picture where my money go.
