Another idea would simply be to replace movie trips with cable TV, though that doesn't help when the latest, greatest new movie comes out and you have to see it NOW!!!!!

I have to add a point in that going to the movies is not equal to television for all people. For myself, the event is an experience. Especially for an eyecandy movie or just to sense reactions of the other movie goers.
I especially love going to midnight showings of mega movies. Though the last 3 Star Wars movies have made me lose a lot of love for the series, it was fun waiting in line with Jedi, stormtroopers and even Boba Fett. Same with Potter. So many wizards and so many with their house robes on.
THis does not mean I will see any movie. I have to really be looking forward to it. There has not been a time in the past 10 years** when I have simply gone to the movies for something to do.
**Summer of 1999. Had a free movie pass, AC died in apartment, heat index up to 110. Went to a movie simply b/c it was very long (The Patriot). And, as we all know, in the summer, most theaters keep their temp at around 45 degrees.

You can just "borrow" them from the internet. Sometimes you can get them before the theaters. Good quality too.

Thanks for the link, FMF!
With technology these days, I simply don't understand the "need" to see stuff on the big screen. Yes, some movies are just better on the big screen. I can admit that. But I would argue 90%+ would be just fine on a television at home.
Most of the comments were positive, but there were some negatives ones too. All to be expected, I suppose.
