For birthday or Christmas parties, collect for a worthy cause in lieu of presents.

We started this with my boys (since I could throw away 3/4 of their toys and they would STILL have too many!). This year, my oldest (5 years) decided he want to collect school supplies for a local organization that distributes to foster children. He then helped deliver them to the director of the program.
