This week marks two milestone's for me -- I actually made the carnival and I was selected as having the best post! The carnival host said he would have rather I not win as it looks like favoritism (and I feel the same -- I wanted to just make, not win), but it must have been a slow week so I got the #1 spot. :-) Anyway, if you'd like to read it, the winning post is The Most Useful Thing Students Can Do to Prepare for the Job Market.

Congrats to all the participants!

Best of Money Carnival #1

It's my pleasure to host the first ever Best of Money Carnival, the blog carnival that recognizes the top 10 personal finance posts each week.

I had over 100 articles submitted this week, though many of them did not qualify. Why not? Because they did not follow the carnival rules and include a short description of their post. So for those of you wondering why you didn't make the top 10, it may be because you were disqualified before you even got started. There's nothing to fear though since I'm sure you'll get it right next week.

That said, here are the ten best accurately submitted posts for this week, in countdown order, along with each author's description of their post:

10Debt Tsunami: The Ultimate Method For Paying Off Debt - When it comes to debt reduction methods, chances are you've heard of the Debt Snowball, as well as paying Highest-Interest First. However, when contemplating how best to attack your debt your best bet may be the Debt Tsunami! The Debt Tsunami is a hybrid approach, which focuses on eliminating the debt with the greatest emotion impact. This post contains a thorough explanation of benefits/drawbacks, as well as detailed step by step instructions for getting your Tsunami into action!

9 - Pay Off Mortgage Early? Or Invest? - Should you pay off your mortgage early? Or should you focus on investing with your spare cash? This is one of the most hotly debated topics in personal finance, with vocal proponents on both sides. In this article, I take a look at this issue from both angles and then share our approach with you.

8 - How to Save Money on Your Wedding - We go through the big day at least once but many people think it's one of the most expensive days of our lives. Here are some tips that will help reduce the expenses of this important day.

7 - 25 Traits Of The Not So Well To Do - One thing I've noticed among folks I know that are cash-strapped is that they have a number of traits in common. I've compiled a list of 25 things I see in what I call the Not So Well To Do. Check it out!

6 - Spend $.42 And Achieve Your Goals in 2009 - It’s Not Too Late - Even if you write down your financial goals, you may find it difficult to achieve them. Here's a very easy trick you can play on yourself that will boost the chances of actually achieving your goal.

5 - Using Financial Aid to Graduate Debt Free - A guide to help college students and parents navigate through the financial aid maze. The post details the different types of grants and loans. Also goes over the expected family contribution and how that is calculated.

4 - How to Review Your Equifax Credit Report - This is a detailed post discussing the various parts of your Equifax credit report, including how you can save the report and how you can dispute any errors.

3 - Amish Finances - A look into one of the most secret personal and community-wide financial systems in the world through interviews with Amish and my father, a personal Amish driver for over ten years. "Amish Finances" is filled with takeaway lessons that will leave the reader wondering whether or not they should shed hundreds of years of progress in order to get their finances straight.

2 - 10 Economic and Business Pro Tips from World of Warcraft - The economic recession, investor panic, and the numerous bailouts might have been avoided if only CEO's and Wall Street traders weren’t n00bs, and had played World of Warcraft to learn these Pro Economic and Business lessons.

1 - How To Avoid Foreclosure: Keep Your House In Troubled Times - These days, people are thinking that walking away from their home may be the solution to escape their financial burdens. But before you do something like this, make sure you've tried everything! We cover some of that reasoning in this article.

And there you have it -- the top 10 personal finance posts of the week and the conclusion of the first ever Best of Money Carnival.

If you'd like to be considered for the carnival next week, here are details on how to submit a post. For those of you interested, the carnival will be hosted next week by Debt Free Adventure.

What the World Does Not Need and Why I'm Doing It Anyway

As regular readers know, I am a weekly participant in blog carnivals. I've detailed both the benefits of participating in and hosting blog carnivals and have done both throughout the life of this blog. I enjoy and recommend many of the current blog carnivals and I submit something to many of them weekly. And when I'm feeling especially energetic, I agree to host one.

The problem with hosting though is that the most popular blog carnivals have 70 to 80 articles included each week (for example, see my recent hosting of the Carnival of Personal Finance), making them a bear to both host and read. While I applaud their "everyone's in" philosophy, I must admit that they've grown a bit too big for me. Sure, I could read only the three to five editor's picks each week, but that doesn't do it for me as well.

That's why I'm starting the Best of Money Carnival. Yep, that's right, I'm starting a new carnival. The world does not need a new blog carnival for the most part -- and yet it does. Maybe this one is it. We'll see.

Anyway, here's what makes the Best of Money Carnival different than the others:

It features only the ten best (in the opinion of the carnival host) money-related posts of the week -- giving readers the best of the best in personal finance.

In case you're interested, here's what a sample carnival looks like.

Furthermore, I wanted to spice things up a bit, so I added some extras for those involved. Here are the extra advantages of being a host and a participant in the carnival:

  • I will be awarding $1,000 each at the end of the year to the best host and the best post (based on my opinion) payable to the winners' favorite charities.

  • The top 10 posts (as selected by me) will earn automatic bids in my March Madness competition next year.

Details on both of these points can be seen here for hosts and here for participants. One key note for partipants: you MUST submit a summary with your post -- one that tells in two or three sentences what your post is about. If you do not, you will not be considered for the carnival.

In addition, hosts and participants receive the same benefits as hosting and being in any other carnival. And readers get a sifted-through list of ten great personal finance posts each week.

If you want details, visit the Best of Money Carnival site and page through the "about" section listed on the homepage.

How You Can Get Involved

There are two ways you can get involved with this carnival:

As always, I welcome your suggestions and thoughts. I suspect the carnival will be in flux for a bit as we decide what works, what doesn't, what's the best overall process, etc., so stay tuned to the carnival's site for updates if you're interested.

Two Editor's Choices!!!!

To be named an Editor's Choice post in a big carnival is a great honor, and I made it (somehow) as a selection in TWO of them! Here they are along with my posts that were included:

Lots of good posts on both of these -- stop by each of them for some great reads.

Carnival of Personal Finance

Welcome to this week's edition of the Carnival of Personal Finance.

For those of you who do not know what a carnival is, check out Best Practices for Driving Traffic with Blog Carnivals and How to Get Your Blog to 100,000 Visitors and Beyond, Step 13; Participate in Carnivals. This particular carnival is one where money bloggers submit their best recent posts. Readers then scan through the list and read the posts that interest them. If you need a more regular fix of great personal finance articles, see my Twitter blog where I list the best out of hundreds of posts each week.

If you submitted a post to this carnival and don't see it here, it's because: 1) it wasn't a post that was money related or 2) it appeared to be a spam or commercial post.

I'm sticking with my usual method of hosting a carnival -- listing a summary of each piece with the author's reason for submitting the post to the carnival (for those that submitted one) and/or a bit of the post itself as a summary -- so you readers know what to expect before you get to the post. In addition, I am posting the entries in the order they were submitted.

We'll start with what I consider to be the best posts from this week's submissions:

  • Living Beyond Your Means: School Bus Driver Losing Her $800,000 Home to Foreclosure - Maybe I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that anyone who drives a big yellow bus full of screaming kids is a few paygrades below a cardiac surgeon that invested 10 to 15 years of their life learning a highly specific tradecraft or a successful small business owner who busted their hump for 15 hours a day after 10 years of hard work.

  • Why It May Be Costly to Reject Paying Points - What I hope you take away from this article is simple: The idea that it may be to your benefit to pay points on a loan, and rejecting the possibility only encourages prospective loan providers to lie about what loan they are really going to deliver.

  • Commuting Cost Analysis: Bus vs Bike vs Car - Which mode of transportation is costs you the least?  This analysis takes the cost of time as well as the more traditional costs associated with each commuting type into consideration in the analysis.

  • How We Cut Our Car Insurance Bill in Half - Last night we canceled our car insurance with Progressive and went with Ameriprise through our Costco membership. Progressive was $118/month. I shopped around and Amerprise offered a little bit more for insurance coverage for $58/month.

  • Stress at Work Getting You Down? How To Manage Job Burnout - These days, even those of us with just one job to deal with work twice as hard in our current positions to avoid the fatal pink slip. Unless you have an emotional suit of armor, you may very well end up burning out.

And here's the rest of the pack by the date/time they were submitted:

Thanks for visiting the Carnival of Personal Finance!

Star Money Articles and Carnivals for the Week of Feb 23

As you might imagine, I read (or at least skim/review quickly) hundreds of personal finance articles every single weekday. I can only feature a handful of those pieces on this blog and a lot of great stuff goes to waste. I've tried to combat this in part by having a weekly roundup of what I've called "star money articles" -- articles from around the web that I thought were especially good -- but a lot of good stuff still goes without a single mention. I think I now have a solution for that.

I've started to post pieces I find interesting on a Twitter account I just started. I list a few words of commentary and then a link to what I consider to be interesting posts, but ones I probably won't cover here at Free Money Finance. If you're interested in checking these out, simply visit my Twitter site or follow along on the bottom left side bar of this blog. In addition to personal finance articles you may get a bit of insight into my private life, for those of you interested in that sort of stuff (not too much of that -- and mostly on nights and weekends.) I know there's only so much kids/soccer/chess posts that people can handle. :-)

I'll still post some links here every other week or so, but for now this will be my main way to get through all the good stuff I find in a week. I may throw in a giveaway or two there, so keep your eyes open!!!

For now, here is the list of the carnivals Free Money Finance was in this week and my posts that were included:

Enjoy!

P.S. Carnival Hosts -- If my post is in your carnival in a given week, please send me the URL to the carnival and I will include it in my weekly roundup.

FMF to Host the Carnival of Personal Finance Next Week

Just a notice that I'll be hosting the Carnival of Personal Finance next week (if you don't know what a carnival is, check this out). Like I've done in the past, I'll be posting the submissions in the order that they are submitted. (And in case you don't know, the posts earlier on in a carnival get more exposure/traffic.) So if you want to make the most of this carnival, get those submissions in quickly (you can submit them here.)

For readers, be ready for some GREAT articles next week. The Carnival of Personal Finance has somewhere around 70 different posts per week, so there's lots of good stuff in each one. I'll select my favorites, but you'll want to check many/most of them out. Should be a good time for all!
