One of my most popular posts has been about how you can turn a hobby into an income. After all, who wouldn't want to do something they love and get paid for it as well?
The post generated a lot of positive comments and I thought you'd be interested in some of them. For starters, here's one about blogging:
"This (making money with a hobby) has become even easier with the monetization of blogs. Write a blog about something you're passionate about, throw on a few google ads, and you'll be rich!"
Here's another take on making money by blogging:
"I've told several people over the past few days while they're talking about their interests that they could blog about their hobbies and make money. Homebrewing, children's books, spiritual thinking, Adobe Illustrator power tips, comic art, anything. And there are still a lot of domain names with "blog" in them available. Just download WordPress or Movable Type and you're good to go! There's always a chance that one of them will be the next InstaPundit or the next PFBlog."
Shifting gears, here's a comment about a "real" hobby:
"Thanks for this article! I toy around with the idea of turning my hobbies of photography and custom matting & framing into a small source of additional income. I know it's possible, and this article has inspired me to set aside some time this weekend to get my ideas down on paper."
I love that comment. That's why I write this blog -- to inspire people to take action on their finances.
Here's another thought:
"This has been a big topic around our house lately. We're trying to develop an embroidery business for my wife as she makes wonderful shirts for the boys.
I'd also love to turn my hobby (golf) into something profitable, but since I still want to remain an amateur in order to be able to play in all the fun tournaments, it means I can't teach golf or win money by playing. Yeah I know - golf is silly with all its rules... I could own and operate a golf course, driving range, etc. but those are a little out of my reach right now.
I do a little web work on the side (former hobby and is now my profession) which provides some vacation money for us, but I am thinking about revisiting that idea of having my own web site dev company to bring in another stream of income.
I've always believed that if you do what you love, you can find a way to be successful with it.
Thanks for giving a little more inspiration on this topic!"
More inspiration! I love it!
And now, a comment for those philosophers among you:
"In a nut shell it really means love what you do and do what you love..."
And to round out the topic, one final word on the matter:
"Collecting is a good example. You buy in big lots, and sell the spares on ebay individually."
