Here's a short money saving trip for those of you who still have vacations left this summer:
Call the specific location when you are staying at a chain hotel or motel. You can often get a lower rate by doing that instead of calling the chain’s 800 number.

My wife has an even better trick. She bids on Priceline.com, using Hotwire.com to narrow down the hotel. By doing this, we've been able to get some incredible deals (50%+ off what you'd get by calling a chain).
Also, loyalty does pay off in the end rather than always shopping for the cheapest rate. Marriott and Starwood have two of the better loyalty rewards programs among the hospitality industry.
