Here's an excellent, real-life money saving tip sent in by a reader via comments:
When we did a 2,600-mile road trip, we simply carried along our wireless-enabled laptop and would pull up outside of a hotel that advertised wireless. We would then do a search of multiple sites for the best internet rates, make the reservation, and then go in the hotel 10 minutes later. :)
We saved anywhere from $15-25 on the best desk rate available.
Very creative. And effective.

Sadly, many hotels with free wireless require an access code that they give you when you check in. This restricts wireless to its customers.

Plus if you talk to the nice person behind the counter you could negotiate a lower rate. They can go below the posted rates. Anything you see on the internet is available inside.
