It's been awhile since I've done a down and dirty post with a boatload of money saving tips, so let's do one now. This piece from Money Central fits the bill with 16 ways to save on health insurance.
Here are the best of their tips:
- Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
- Give your complete health story, but do it on your own terms and give the complete picture.
- Watch your language.
- Shop around.
- Alert your doctor.
- Shop quietly.
- Pick your insurance professional carefully.
- Develop good habits.
- Prepare for your exams.
The best tips in my book:
1. Quit smoking. I've posted on it again and again and again. This is just one area that it costs you -- and it costs you big-time in other areas too.
2. Get some exercise. I walk in the winter (indoor treadmill) and spend all summer biking (4,300 miles last year). My resting heart rate went from mid-70's to low 50's in half a year. It helped me get a better life insurance rate despite the fact that I was a couple years older than when I last got a policy. And don't make excuses. The average American watches some outrageous number of hours of TV every night. Give up an hour every other night to exercise and you'll feel better and your health will improve.
