My style is more "be rich but look middle class", but this piece on "looking rich but living cheap" is close enough. There are some worthless ideas here, but a few deserve consideration.
- They are:
- Buy classics.
- Vicarious wealth by volunteering.
- Never pay retail.
- Learn to work the Web.
- And learn to time your purchases.
These are basic, simple money saving tips in my book. Good, but not revolutionary.
I really don't worry about looking like I'm rich or not. There are a few reasons for this:
1. It doesn't really matter to me.
2. I think if you look rich, you often pay more -- especially in places where negotiation is needed.
3. Looking rich is uncomfortable in many cases. I'd rather be casual and feel good.
Overall, the U.S. needs a lot more people that are less worried about looking good and more worried about growing their net worth. They'd be a lot better off for it.
I agree with you. It's just easier to not live rich and not force a facade. If you're trying to look rich, you'll also have a bit of pride holding you back from taking gifts, discounts, or being able to negotiate.
