Step 15 to getting to 100,000 visitors and beyond: Write unusual posts to get attention.
Nothing gets you attention (translation: traffic) like a unique spin on an old topic, an unusual piece of information, or a detailed viewpoint on something everyone is interested in. The blogosphere LOVES these sort of posts, so the more of them you can come up with, the more traffic you can generate.
Here are some examples from Free Money Finance:
- Several months ago, I wrote Best Practices for Driving Traffic with Blog Carnivals. In the piece, I gave a detailed viewpoint of how carnivals drove traffic (and how much traffic). It dealt with a topic that many people are interested in including many high-traffic sites, so when I posted on it, so did they. The resulting traffic was very, very nice.
- I continue to post on the costs of pets (and how expensive they are). As you might imagine, this isn't the most popular topic I write about as people love their pets to death. But it creates conversation and interest, and thus traffic. So I continue to talk about how Fido might cost you a fortune.
- My latest venture, the Bible and Money, has started to generate some traffic with a whole new audience. I post on the topic every Sunday (how fitting, huh?) and it's started to attract attention, and traffic, from a new audience.
So think about topics you could talk about that are a bit unusual. If you do, someone may notice, tell their friends, and on and on -- and you may have a stampede on your hands. ;-)
