Step 10 to getting to 100,000 visitors and beyond: Email all your contacts telling them about your blog.
Here's another simple idea -- but one that works pretty well.
After you get your blog up and have 15-20 posts, email all your friends, family, and business associates and tell them about it. I did early on in the life of my blog and because 1) they liked the subject, 2) they liked the content, and 3) they knew/liked me, I got many subscribers right off the bat. It was as simple as that.
However, there are some tips for making the most of this tip:
- Invite people you know fairly well. Don't email someone you haven't had contact with in two years. It's bad form and likely won't result in anything other than them feeling like they've been spammed.
- Make the message personal. A group email is ok, but a personal one is better (believe me -- I've tried them both). If you can, send a personal email that includes something that you know fits the interests of the person receiving the email. Something like "I know you're interested in investing" makes the email more personal.
- Be ready for rejection. Someone (or maybe many) on your list won't be interested in what you're doing and will tell you so. Don't take it personally. Your blog isn't for everyone (many people still don't even know what a blog is) and as such you shouldn't be offended if someone isn't interested.

If you're looking for anonymity with your blog, you may wish to skip this step. In my case, I have little interest in letting my coworkers in on the intimate details of my finances (or that I blog during work hours).

I'm just staring out with my blog - about a week in. Thank you for the step by step instruction. What you said about the simple things not being so simple when you are starting out is quite true. Thank you so much!
