Here's some great news from Money Central for those who are less than romantic but handy with Quicken: financial responsibility beats out many other traits normally associated with having a great relationship. Here are the highlights:
When it comes to finding lasting love, financial responsibility beats out hot sex, at least according to a survey commissioned by credit scoring company Fair Isaac.
The survey of 1,022 American adults, conducted by Opinion Research Group, asked what two personal traits were most important to a long-term relationship. The answers: Faithfulness and honesty came out first and second, selected by 53% and 52% of the respondents, respectively. Financial responsibility was third, selected by 22% of the respondents. A sense of humor was No. 4 (18%).
Lovers say fiscal responsibility is twice as important as sexual harmony.
Well, we've already established that marriage helps grow your net worth, now we see that having a good net worth (or at least financial control) helps a marriage be strong. But who would have guessed that it would have rated above a sense of humor and sexual harmony?
On the other hand, the study reports that "problems paying bills" is the second-leading source of pressure and stress on relationships (ranking just barely behind "problems with in-laws, relatives").
So, if money matters are good, it's likely that a relationship will be good. However, if money is a problem, it's likely that a relationship will be strained. This really isn't news to a lot of people reading this, but is a reinforcement of something you've probably always known to be true.
My takeaway is that there are yet two more benefits to good money management: a stronger relationship with your spouse and less stress in the relationship. These are things that are very much sought after and appreciated buy couples. And while money can't buy a great relationship and peace, where couples are concerned, it certainly helps!
