Step 18 to getting to 100,000 visitors and beyond: Get online media/blog coverage.
I know this tip falls into the category of "it's easier said than done", but if you can get big online and offline "media" to mention your blog, it will mean BIG traffic for your site.
I've had several successes in this area including mentions by Business Week and The Wall Street Journal offline and Business Week, Instapundit, Business Opportunities, and Scobleizer online. While many of these were "lucky" occurrences, there are some things you can do to make it more likely that you'll get noticed. Fortunately, many of these are tasks you should have already been doing on your blog including:
- Write compelling content and unusual posts that will get attention. In short, write about things people want to read about, talk about, and link to.
- Publicize what you're doing. If people don't know what you're up to, how can they talk about it? Where appropriate (translation: don't spam), mention one of your topics in some of the comments on other blogs. And if you are covering a topic you think people will want to read about, email them to let them know what you're up to.
- Find unique places to promote your blog and include your topic in blog carnivals. These are great ways to get noticed by others.
- Network. Email other bloggers and develop friendships. Then, when you have a hot topic you want to promote, tell them about it.
- Read and be active on other blogs. People read (or at least look at) blogs that comment on their blog.
- Have a good blog -- people will notice. If you simply cover the basics of picking the right topic, picking a good name, having a compelling tagline, creating a usable and attractive design, and writing compelling content, you'll be well ahead of the pack. Then, other blogs and media outlets will find you and tell others about the great job you're doing.

Getting mentioned on TV doesn't work so well. Maybe it would if you are actually on there being interviewed as an expert. My site's been mentioned on MSNBC for covering certain stories and there's not a noticeable traffic increase when the story is broadcast.
