Step 19 to getting to 100,000 visitors and beyond: Get offline media coverage.
I mentioned offline media coverage in the last tip, but wanted to be sure it had a place of its own. As such, I'm making it tip #19.
I've had a couple offline successes including mentions by Business Week and The Wall Street Journal. Unfortunately, these were more "luck" than the online coverage I discussed last time -- I was in the right place at the right time. However, there are two steps that work for online coverage that you can also be used to get offline mentions:
- Network. If people don't know what you're up to, how can they talk about it? Communicate to reporters and writers of offline publications. Invite them to visit your blog to see what you're doing. Another idea: offer to be a source for stories they are working on. Do all you can to be known as a helpful source. Then, when the need arises, they'll call on you. (BTW, networking with other blogs helps as well. After all, reporters may contact another blogger and ask him who he'd recommend for a story in your subject area. If you're known to him, you'll get the referral and the publicity!)
- Have a good blog -- people will notice -- even offline publications. If you simply cover the basics of picking the right topic, picking a good name, having a compelling tagline, creating a usable and attractive design, and writing compelling content, you'll be well ahead of the pack. Then, offline media outlets will find you and use your blog as an example when they have need to.
