To add to my collection of posts on how expensive pets are, comes this piece from
Entrepreneur magazine on 10 Pet Businesses to Start Today. Now this piece could be good news for you -- if you're looking at starting a business aimed at pets/pet owners. However, if you are a pet owner yourself, it's simply a list of expenses you can look forward to paying over the life of your pet.
These businesses include:
- Pooper-Scooper Service
- Pet Photography
- Dog Clothing and Accessories
- Pet Sitting
- Dog Day Care
- Dog Obedience Training
- Dog Walking Service
- Tropical Fish and Aquarium Rentals
- Pet Toys
- Pet Breeder
- Gourmet Pet Treats
Now here are some facts/comments showing how lucrative (for the business) and costly (for the owner) these ideas can be:
- Americans spend more than $30 billion annually on their pets.
- Current rates [for doggie day care] are in the range of $15 to $25 per day, with discounts for weekly service.
- Most [pooper scooper] services charge a flat monthly rate of between $30 and $60 to stop by customers' homes or businesses weekly to clean up their yards, which takes no more than 10 minutes per visit.
- Current rates for in-home training are in the range of $30 to $50 per hour and many trainers create dog-training packages for their customers, which include a set amount of training classes and course materials in print and video formats.
- Once a regular client base has been established for this business [tropical fish and aquarium rentals], the annual profits could well exceed $50,000 or more.
- The fastest growing segment of the pet foods industry is gourmet dog treats. There's a lot of money to be made in this business because the profit margin is very high and people are willing to pay for the best dog treats money can buy.
Funny, they didn't mention pet acupuncture as a good business to start. ;-)
