Here's a comment that was left on my post titled Save Up to 50% on Your Heating Bill with Three Simple Tasks that I thought was a good additional thought on what I noted:
Regular filter replacements also keep your forced air motor from burning out too early in the life of the system from the reduced air resistance. I pay less than a dollar each for my filters, and at $12/year even for a single month's gain in motor ($400 service call) life, it's a bargain.
Good point. If you can spend $1 (or even $12) and avoid a $400 cost, that's a good deal!
I replace my filters once every other month or so (when they look dirty) and that seems to work ok for me. However, I spend more than $1 on each filter as I use ones that get extra dust and allergen particles.
It is interesting information. Due to the back draft pumping carbon monoxide and radon throughout your ventilation system, Energy Star says that it's essential to cover the filter slot after replacing the filter. The size of Filter for furnace should be an accurate size too.
