Here's a money saving tip from the Consumer Credit Counseling Service on how to save when shopping for groceries:
Never go food shopping when you're hungry.
This is an oldie, but a goodie! Unfortunately, it's often not followed in our household.
It seems like we are out a lot on Saturday mornings, and after we make our usual trips, we end up at...Costco!!!!!
Now anyone who's ever been to Costco on a Saturday around noon knows that it's a feed frenzy. Costco is sampling everything -- soups, pot pies, frozen pizza, chips and dip, ham, cookies -- you name it, they have it to try. The good thing is that by the time we leave, we're often so full that we don't need anything else to eat for 2-3 hours. So it's a good deal, right?
Oh, but there is a dark side. You see, we end up buying about 10-15% of everything we taste (their sinister motive for offering us "free" stuff in the first place.) So we always spend more than we intended to. However, we really do like new and great-tasting foods and Costco is generally pretty good on prices, so it's not that bad, really.
We were at a Costco the other day and struck up a conversation with one of the sampling ladies. She said that one customer brings in her seven kids every Sunday and they eat and eat and eat. It's the family's dining out experience for the week. I would add that as a money saving tip, but even I'm not that cheap! ;-)
