Here's a set of money saving tips from Money magazine's May issue. These are all centered on how to save on appliances:
- Shop in May. Prices are slashed for Mother's Day and Memorial Day sales.
- Compare prices. Use Froogle.com and ShopLocal.com to see how other stores are pricing the same item.
- Negotiate. If you spot a lower price online, ask a store to match it.
- Ask about outlets. Find out if there are places a retailer sells its less-than-perfect items.
One more thing I would add: check out Consumer Reports before you buy. We do on every major purchase and they have yet to give us a bad tip.
Our latest purchase was a dishwasher (the old one was 17 years old, so it was ready to go). We got a new washer and dryer a year earlier (the previous versions were 15 years old). The good news: our stuff lasts a long time. The bad news: it eventually wears out no matter how much you maintain it.
