Here's a piece from Yahoo titled 15 ways to live more cheaply. One of their suggestions I particularly like is as follows:
Clip (some) coupons. Coupons are great when they're for products you regularly use and when they make those products less costly than the generic brands, Horowitz said. But buying something you don't need just because you have a coupon is a waste of money. So clip judiciously.
This is the reason we buy the Sunday paper -- to get the coupons. When you compare the savings from coupons versus the cost of the paper, there's simply no comparison. We make 2-3 times the cost of the paper in savings every issue -- and that's counting only the coupons. Add in savings from ads, and it's a financial home run.
Of course, there is a danger -- that you'll get sucked into buying stuff you don't need/want -- so you have to be on guard. Otherwise, coupons may not be saving you money.
Another option is to get free coupons online. There are many websites with listings.
