I generally think his advice is well intended but every time I listen to him, he makes me afraid to spend my money. He also makes me feel that I should live in a hole and get by on soda crackers and water.

I'm more impressed with Dave than I was -- although I disagree with his "no credit at all" idea. His "debt snowball" is indeed less than optimal for a disciplined person, but he's always _said_ that. His point is to help the people who typically get into tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt, and for those people, the problem IS psychological.
