According to my local veterinarian, over 50 percent of the animals he sees are overweight, which results in 60 percent of the health-related ailments he treats.
For some reason, it seems to me that cats are often overweight -- I see more fat cats (literally, not the slang meaning of this term) than correct-weight cats. Maybe it's just the company I hang out with, but their dogs seem to more often be in better shape than their cats.
Anyway, if you'd like to save on some vet bills, work to keep Fido and Fifi at the correct weight. They'll be healthier, happier and less costly as a result.

Same thing my vet told me. Being overweight causes problems everywhere from diabetes (thousands of dollars in insulin) to back problems (thousands of dollars in surgeries). Yikes.
