I would definitely take the money if it was an option. Otherwise I would roll it over to take a longer vacation one year. But I can't to either of those things and I have to use it all by the end of the year.

I'm with you on this one--you need time to recharge. If my employer is going to offer vacation time, I'm going to take it.

Right now, I work for an organization that has a very generous PTO policy (it's a university). We basically have two years to use what we accrue in one (the year of accrual and the following year), or we lose it. There is no option to take the cash. So, I fully intend to use it. In fact, at the beginning of the year, I planned out what I knew I had going on and scheduled my vacations for the whole year (our policy is so generous, if I want to have a prayer of coming close to using my allotment, I need to do this).

Of course, there are downsides that require a saving mentality--we don't get paid bereavement, FMLA time, or ST disability, and our PTO bank is both for vacation and sick days. So, to take these into account, I leave a little cushion each year to take care of me in case something were to happen.

If I had the ability to take the cash? No. But, I'm also not in a position to need the cash. Maybe if my situation were different... But right now, no, give me the time off.

Where we work we can GET pay in lieu but I would never in a million years TAKE pay in lieu. I also discourage my staff from taking pay instead of time. I need, want and earn my time off. We can't roll over days though, have to use it within the year. I'm surprised more places don't offer pay instead, seeing as so many employers value presenteeism over performance.

No offense or anything but you have a hsuband who smokes, and you are worried about an emergency fund and insurance...

Simple if you ask me, have him quit smoking. He will become more insurable, your health care costs later in life will be lower and you will save thousands a year for your emergency fund and you can use your vacation for what it was meant for. A Vacation!

I smoked for ten years, if I had that in a lump sum of cash it would equal about $40,000. Granted I was a heavy smoker, but still, think of what I wasted...

At my old job, we were capped on the amount of leave we could build up, so we had to take it regularly. Given a choice, I would have let it build forever.

Neither are an option for me -- we aren't allowed to be paid for unused vacation days, and we can't roll over (they have to be used by the following January). That would be a nice option, though I think everyone needs a vacation (or at least a few days off of relaxation) for their sanity!

Real quick, companies can't financially have an unlimited bank of PTO time. The way an HR person once explained it as they need a large % of that value available as cash in case everyone took it at once. Or had to lay people off, which legally I think have to pay out.

For my industry, most people use it as a severance pay. It allows for a few days of floating while you look for a new job.

I take every bit of vacation that they give me and then some (I was actually negative on vacation hours for the last few months). I believe everyone needs time to recharge.

We don't have the option of taking pay in lieu of vaca and our hours roll over every year. However, even if pay was an option, I would continue to use all my vacation time. I love to travel and being able to do so whenever I like is a large part of making not being retired yet tolerable.

I would probably use some of that vacation that you had and keep most of it. You do need to recharge once in awhile. Unfortunately, my company does not offer pay if we don't use our vacation time so we have no choice but to take them all before the end of the year.

I view this as equivalent to working overtime for more money.

Personally, I take the vacation time, because I need some time off to decompress or allow me travel time for family activities. I've never (yet) worked a job where I got more than 2 weeks, and 2 weeks is barely enough to cover one contiguous vacation, much less the extra days I need to take here and there.

I have never been given the choice, but if I were, I'd probably take the time off most of the time, and maybe take the cash once every few years - for example, if I needed to buy a car.

My employer does not let us cash out our accumulate vacation time, so you have to use it all each year. I'm actually glad they do cause it forces me and everyone else to take some very needed time off.


No one can make your husband stop smoking. He has to want to do it for himself. My husband smoked from age 17, was told he had emphysema 20+ yrs ago, never worked another day, never could stop smoking; lit up on his last trip to the ER (by car, not ambulance); we buried him Friday at the age of 69. Nagging does absolutely NO good!

Please show this to your husband; maybe, it will have some impact. Lou left behind a family who loved him deeply, including 6 children & 13 grandchildren. We all miss him and wish he had quit years ago; he'd still be here with us.

My employer allows us to rollover our vacation days and pays us for our personal/sick time if we do not use them. I have four weeks vacation and 10 personal days. Therefore i take most of my vacation time and rollover the rest and i never use my personal/sick time so i can get paid for it. For me in January that's an additional bonus.

I never did and would never take money over vacation time unless I had no option. It's so important to take time off, and we as workers suffer when others don't take time off because they can be so much harder to work with. You're probably bringing your woes to work without realizing it. On that note, if you receive PTO (vacation and sick time netted together), please take the sick days that you need. The last thing anyone wants is for you to come to work to spread germs. It's about respecting your work environment as much as potential income.

I also think getting 2 weeks a year is so little. A few days for Christmas leaves you a nominal amount for a real getaway in the middle of the year, but my husband and I always take full advantage. Work that day, leave that night, and go back to work refreshed and nostalgic the day after we return home. So if anything, we'd probably forego pay for more vacation :-D

I take what i need to for vacation, but whatever is left I let roll over each year. This is beneficial because eventually when I leave the company I will get that extra time paid out to me, and my hourly wage will be more in the future than it is right now.

I wish we had the option to take a cash payout for unused PTO. We get five weeks a year, but are only allowed to roll over 125% of the annual accrual (works out to a little over 6 weeks) at the end of the year. Sadly it is a struggle to use up that much time each year, especially since we are a client service firm and get rated based on client hours billed. The only way to get paid out for your PTO is to leave the firm.

This is just the opposite problem of my last job, where we were only given two weeks vacation and I always had to use the option to "purchase" an additional week.
