I definitely love it but we gotta do what we gotta do right? There's a dollar extra for nights but I can give it up not just for my husband but the dark circles under my eyes, tiredness all the time and never seeing the sunshine anymore! It's ok if you're young and can hang but for veterans like me it's time to hang up the sneakers!
My only concern about working graveyard shifts is my health. I hope I can find a way to balance my health and earning big.
sahm commented on 'Make More Money by Working at Night'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d83451bcbd69e200e5537532f688342008-06-17T15:31:18Z2008-08-27T12:39:20ZsahmWe were just talking about the possibility of my hubby working a second shift (2-11) due to some upcoming changes...
We were just talking about the possibility of my hubby working a second shift (2-11) due to some upcoming changes at his job. I think it might actually benefit us because he would get more time with the kids in the morning and be more refreshed than trying to get in time after he gets home after a long day at work. We homeschool, so we don't have to worry about him missing time with the kids. We can be very flexible on how and when we "do school". AND, he can be more involved. I don't think I would want him to do a true graveyard shift, though. It is crazy enough when he is on call and gets called in the middle of the night. Trying to keep two kids quiet while Daddy sleeps is tough!
sahm commented on 'Make More Money by Working at Night'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d83451bcbd69e200e553753e0088342008-06-17T15:30:10Z2008-06-17T15:56:39ZsahmWe were just talking about the possibility of my hubby working a second shift (2-11) due to some upcoming changes...
We were just talking about the possibility of my hubby working a second shift (2-11) due to some upcoming changes at his job. There are many benefits of working the night shift, even when you have a family. I was able to spend the majority of my day with my newborn son after he was born and thereby forego daycare costs. I had a chance to really bond with my son during his first 2 years of life and I wouldn't trade that for the world. I don't give too much credence to the studies that show a reduced life expectancy or increased ill health. As for pay, I did make a little bit more working nights. Combined with the daycare savings it made for a huge difference in what I was able to put away and invest. The major downside was not being able to spend much time with my wife, and family (all three of us together) was limited to the weekends. Now that my son is older and "needs" to be among his peers to socialize, etc., I've switched over to days, but I still miss having all day to spend with my little guy, even if I was rather tired sometimes when doing so.
Alexandria commented on 'Make More Money by Working at Night'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d83451bcbd69e200e5535a1ff488332008-06-17T13:07:21Z2008-08-27T12:41:05ZAlexandriahttp://www.monkeymama.savingadvice.comAs a teen I worked the night shift at a local amusement park, counting money. We got a $1 or $2 hourly premium for working nights, which was a LOT when making minimum wage in the 90s.

So, I agree.

For me, I realize I don't really do nights. I never really adjusted and usually ended up getting off on the earlier side. My spouse seemed to be very fine with it. He is a night owl and I think he would go back to working nights for the extra pay. (We worked together back then).

It could be in the genes. His father works nights. For them it seems to be rather harsh because he always seems to be working or sleeping. It is a tough schedule to keep. HE works a lot of weekends as well, so his wife is always griping about his schedule. Whenever we visit it is hard for the kids to understand to keep quiet because he is sleeping.

As a teen it is kind of fun though. So those are the 2 ends of the spectrum.
