Lots of interesting stuff from around the web today. Normally, I would post these on Twitter, but I thought these were worth mentioning here:
-
Free Annual Credit Reports -- Site from the FTC that notes which site is the only authorized site to get a free credit report under federal law. (In other words, they are blasting that "other site" which advertises a ton but isn't really free.) Has a couple cute videos mocking the impersonator too. ;-)
-
A faithful diner's last will and condiments -- "Bruce Lindsay knew a good bargain when he saw one: For decades, the millionaire ate three square meals a day in the cafeteria of tiny Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, surrounded by students who called him the 'campus grandpa.' When he passed away last month at 79, the college learned just what a generous tip he had left. He bequeathed his fortune -- amassed by buying up cut-rate oil leases and flipping beachfront homes -- to the Christian university, which like many private colleges across the country has been bedeviled by the slumping economy."\
-
Help Wanted: Two Million Jobs Open Across Range of Industries -- "Help wanted: pharmacists, engineers and nurses. Believe it or not, even some banks are hiring, at least for their technology teams. While the recession has claimed 4.4 million jobs, the economy has created others, many of them for highly trained and specialized professionals. More than 2 million jobs openings now exist across a range of industries, according to government data."
-
Buffett: The economy has ‘fallen off a cliff’ -- Really? I hadn't noticed. ;-)
The jobs story is interesting and somewhat telling as well...there are jobs to be had, but only if you have specialized training. But that's harder to get for all the office worker bees that are being let go and who don't have the time or money to go get a Pharm.D or an engineering degree. But this should be a good guide for someone looking to start college...education and health care related careers, while maybe not always paying as much, are pretty much universally needed no matter where you choose to live.
