In their annual "What People Earn" issue from a couple weeks ago, People Magazine listed four ways to earn extra cash as follows:
- Product demonstrator
- Delivery person
- Hotel desk clerk
- Bank teller
Ok, so it's not the most exciting list you'll ever see, but these jobs have three things going for them if you need some extra money: they are/can be part-time jobs, they have flexible schedules, and they pay $8 to $12 an hour. Sure, these jobs aren't going to make you rich -- but if you need a few extra bucks here and there, they can certainly help.
One funny related side note: check out my post titled Can You Pay for a Costco Membership by Eating Free Samples? Scroll to the end to the comments made by Betty, a Costco product demonstrator. I think she has some real anger management issues going on! ;-)
I would also add two positions that I have filled in the past, part time, to earn some extra money. One was a security guard and the other was working in a hospital as an orderly.

I read 2 of Betty's comments and I really could not see anything angry. In fact I agreed with some of her pts. It may make you feel better to think you are saving loads of money by eating samples of processed crap. And now you have to ridicule the lady who pointed out that crap has other people's crap on it too. Betty, make sure you burn those gloves after you take them off ;-)

How about barista at Starbucks? I bet you could sneak all the free coffee you want!

I read this story and went and read the comments you pointed at. Let me first just say that I came here from a link on a Christian blog pointing here as a place to read good financial advice for Christians.
I'm so, so disappointed in what I'm seeing. The undertone to many comments you make is uncharitable. Making fun of Betty because she is someone worried about her job rather than just there to hand you free food.

Betty isn't the only one who notices the people stuffing themselves at Costco. But let's face it, many people have no pride in their appearance (clothes etc.) or in how others perceive them, especially strangers. And if you don't mind people thinking you look like a slob, are you really going to care if they also think you are a freeloader?
Personally, I feel a little guilty when I sample something I have no intention of buying. (But only a little!)
To Betty's point about making her quota - that's a part of the job, and her colleagues have the same challenge, so it's a level playing field. The good salesperson figures out who the real prospects are and how to close the deal with them.

Wow, you think Betty has anger issues? How about you having guilt issues for doing exactly what she is "angry" about? lol
A Costco membership pays for itself provided you buy the correct type of things there. Going there to munch on the samples is stupid - primarily for your health. Do you really want to be feeding your body that sewage?

Bank teller and hotel desk clerk are no jobs to be sneered at as "slumming it." Perhaps here in the US they only pay minimum wage, but a bank teller in Canada - for example - where the banks are not institutions to be laughed at by any respect; you're making quite a bit more than minimum wage. I actually think it would be quite interesting to have either of these two jobs and have known friends in the banking industry. It's hardly "slumming it," at least in Canada. I can't speak for the experience at the "eighth/third bank of SmallTown."

At a certain point isn't doing this as a second job worthless? Its easier to save money then to get a second job for a measly $10/hr. After taxes that would be about $6 per hour. Hardly worth it in my eyes
