I've detailed how I got a GREAT job by volunteering and wanted to share another (though small) example of how you can find new work by volunteering to help charitable organizations.
Every summer my kids help a local church with their Vacation Bible School. It's not our church, but is a good one with a nice summer program near our house. The kids have historically helped by serving treats to younger kids, running games, and the like.
This year they found out that my son has the ability to run a soundboard (a skill he learned while volunteering at our church.) They were impressed with his work and told him that in the future they would call him for paid gigs like funerals and weddings. No, it's probably not going to be a fortune, but it will be some nice income for him and is something he wouldn't have known about (or been skilled at for that matter) if he hadn't volunteered first (FYI, he's looking at expanding into the video department at our church in the fall, another skill that may go somewhere.)
Volunteering is a great way to network -- and we all know the power of networking when it comes to growing our careers and making extra money. So here's a friendly reminder to volunteer. Not only will you be helping others, but you may be helping yourself to some additional income or a great new job.
Do good to others and good things will come to you right? :D
