For those of you new to Free Money Finance, I post on The Bible and Money every Sunday. Here's why.
Today I'm posting Proverbs 10:4, a short verse that gets to the point about the fruits of hard work (and what you get when you don't apply yourself.) From the NIV:
Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
Next is the Contemporary English Version -- which is much more blunt:
Laziness leads to poverty; hard work makes you rich.
And finally, words from the Message:
Sloth makes you poor; diligence brings wealth.
Notice that the verse does not say that all people in poverty are there because they are lazy. Instead it says that if you are lazy, you will likely end up poor.
As for hard work, does working hard always lead to wealth? Nope. This is where you need to apply this verse to the rest of Proverbs (and the Bible). We all need to work hard in the proper way while applying the right principles. What are those principles? They are the seven pillars of financial success I've previously detailed here at FMF:
- Pillar 1: Spend Less than You Earn
- Pillar 2: Grow Your Career
- Pillar 3: Beware of Debt
- Pillar 4: Saving for the Future
- Pillar 5: Invest to Make Your Money Grow
- Pillar 6: Get Insured
- Pillar 7: Give
If you need more details on these, see my 30 Steps to Great Finances series.
